Review Bone Dry by Cady Vance

Sometimes it isn’t as easy as choosing right or wrong.
Sixteen-year-old Holly Bennett is a comic book nerd, a con artist, and a shaman. Most days Holly wishes she could trade in her power of spirit communication for something more useful--like fireballs or Wolverine claws. She knows spirits aren't exactly Casper the Friendly Ghosts. They're dangerous beings from Lower World who snack on human life, and messing with the magic from their world is an express ticket to big trouble. But when a shaman sticks her mom's mind between their world and ours, Holly becomes the unexpected breadwinner in the family. She uses her burgeoning shaman powers to set up fake hauntings and "banish" the so-called ghosts from her wealthy classmates' bedrooms. For a fee, of course.

When actual spirits start manifesting, Holly discovers that other shamans have come to town, summoning life-sucking spirits for their own ends. And the newcomers may just hold the clue Holly's been looking for--the one that can release her mom's mind from its Lower World prison. With the help of both a cute web comic artist and her partner-in-con, Holly plots to take them down, throwing her into a whirlwind of speedboat getaways, breaking and entering, and astral projections into the spirit world. And as her mom's mind slips further away, Holly has to fight to save her, and the rest of the town, before they get sucked into Lower World permanently.

My Review & Thoughts
Cover: Mysterious as the story line!
Genre(s): Young Adult, Teen, Paranormal...mixed with romance

"Is our friendly, neighborhood ghostbuster in action again?"

Wow! This book was a surprise from the very first few pages! It had my attention and even had me looking in the dark corners at night. (Haaa-wimp) It was mixed in with a problem that needed to be solved, action, and secrets revealed! It was a bit dark at times with paranormal spirits and spells cast.

Holly is a 'rookie' shaman, ones who can summoning and banish spirits! She's been coning people in high school with her pal Laura, who also is a shaman. Holly's mother went on an assignment and came back cursed that puts her in a blank mind set and is eating her life away. Holly is determined to find the shaman who caused this to her mother but it leads to very dangerous territory that can risk her own life. Not only does Holly have to worry about her mom, but shaman's in town are engraving ruins in all the neighborhood houses. She is called upon with her talent to banish the spirits. Shamans are not to happy with Holly's interference and don't take it lightly.

Holly was a very likable character! She was snarky, leading heroine, and knows how to hold her own. Mixed in with humorous personality but also sneaky as "cat-woman", Holly definitely was a fun character to go on this mystery with.

"Jason Harris taught me how to fake-faint when we were kids, but that would still leave me here where things were weird. Maybe I should make a timely exit to the bathroom. And then crawl out the window." - Holly

Love interest definitely surprised me in that I kept anticipating something to happen...I though the author might throw in a wild card and had me questioning Nathan's intentions! It was not heavily focused on making a love connection the center of the story which I think was best due to Holly's predicament in the story. At times I was like wait, there's people chasing you but your daydreaming of Nathan!!!! I do think Nathan character needed more development in feelings for Holly. Being in Holly's POV, don't know much of how Nathan fell in love with her. The end was very fast in wrapping the story up and maybe a bit to quick for the reactions I was expecting from characters.

This book was very well written with a unique story and had me spooked to read at night! It was fast pace with obstacles coming in left and right for the heroine. Overall, it was a very different Young Adult paranormal read I've read so far. I don't come around to many books with the leading lady throwing around chicken bones!!!
Recommended Read!
Possible cliffhanger for another book in the series!
Received book for a honest review!

"They live in a place called Lower World, and it's like a plane of existence right on top of ours. We're their food, and we need to stay calm. Somehow fear is like a lifeline or something. They do things to freak us out, and that's how they on us."

Review Yield the Night by Annette Marie (Steel & Stone 3)

After surviving a round-trip to hell, Piper figures she can survive anything. After all, she just lived through the devastating loss of her Consul apprenticeship and a torturous stint at boarding school. How much worse could it get?

Well, she wasn’t expecting a group of crazy radicals to burn her home to the ground and take her prisoner.

The Gaians, a.k.a. the crazy radicals, plan to rid Earth of daemons and they need Piper’s help. In exchange for her cooperation, they promise her the answer to all her problems: magic. With her own magic, she could reclaim her apprenticeship, the only future she’s ever wanted. But her magic comes at price — it could kill her.

With the life she’s always known crumbling around her and her future slipping from her grasp, she needs Ash’s help one more time. But the greatest danger of all lies within her, and no matter what she does, she may lose everything — including him.

My Review & Thoughts
Cover: Love each one!

Must read prior books in the series to understand book three.

"You have the blood of one of the rarest and most powerful Overworld castes. You couldn't have been luckier."

Yet again Annette Marie does not disappoint in book three Yield the Night. The world building is phenomenal with creatures only this book can bring to life. Piper the heroine toots her own horn just as she's been doing and continuously brings her ass kicking boots along.

I was hoping to finish this book a lot sooner but I'm glad I took my time to devour all the details and the new spins the Author put into this story. I wish I had more time in the day to huddle up in a corner and read the whole book in one sitting!

Steel & Stone by far is one of my favorite series of 2015 and of course many readers can greatly appreciate only waiting a couple months for the following books to be released in the series! Ms. Annette has done an AMAZING job surprising me in each installment with a new twist into this epic world!  (fangirl--yes!)

"If you refuse, your life is mine to do with as I will."

I'm so limited in writing this review. I want to divulge in what has happened, the surprise, agony, shocking betrayal. Since it's book three, I don't want to spoil it for potential readers for this series (MUST read) AND one little slip, I can reveal the big shocker of Yield the Night! Lets just say, the blurb is only sharing less than half of the story and left the whole other half out...and there's a good reason for it. (I promise!)

Where to begin...Piper in Bind the Soul  book two has been dismissed from her apprenticeship and sent off to a 'boarding school' with humans. The opening of book three she is coming back home to surprise her father and uncle, the surprise is on her. With no home, her mother who is part of the Gaians welcome  hold Piper hostage in their secret location. Intentions are mixed in with malicious hope for Piper to side with Gaians ultimate purpose. It is not the only time Piper has to make a choice of destruction or risk the wrath of not bending to the  others will. Lyre and Ash reunite with Piper to find out that the side effects of her magic is killing her rapidly fast. Making enemies allies and traveling into unknown territory, the trio have to find a way to help Piper.

That is a very short summary and that's only the first half of the book. I can't even mention anything else because I'm sure it would be considered a spoiler! The actions is always as good as ever! A mix of snapping necks and swoon with Ash's hidden desire for Piper... It just has mix of everything I LOVE in a book!!

Book three is definitely very focused on Piper. The interaction with other characters was there but it wasn't the main point of this installment. Even Piper and Ash was only bits here and there. My Lyre also was very vague in the scenes. Piper is the main attraction and we discover who her true self is. Alliance are tested, secrets are revealed, and of course vengeance is out for anyone who steps over the draconian!

Again, my patience is soo limited on Ash and Piper's exploding vibe. Is it going to happen or not!? please??? Okay, I will settle for a mystery new lover in book four than!

"Ash had done so much more than capture her heart. He'd changed the very landscape of her soul."

Oh let me not forget the 'risk-y' into the naughty side Ms Annette writes on (wink-wink) Yes, their is a scandalous scene added into book three...hmm...

I do hope in book four that the new Overworld daemons are more explained and even throw in a hotty to give Ash a run around ;)  Exciting news?!? This is not it folks! There is a book four and the way book three finished, there is a lot more to come and plenty of loop holes that need to be read. There's still the Underworld Lord, Gaians, and now two daemon groups from the Overworld in this game. It really is becoming a big game board and I can't wait to find out the outcome of many of the characters.

"The ryujin are an Overworld caste," Miysis answered. "Aquatic quasi-amphibians related to water dragons. They are not friend people,"

Reap the Shadows (book four) is in the works and scheduled to come out in the fall of 2015, no date has been released yet! All we can be super excited for is that one it comes out this year and two this is perfect read with some hot cocoa! ( of course it may be spilling every where with all the gasping and adrenaline)
Highly Recommended series of 2015!!
Cliffhanger

Thank you to Annette Marie for the advance reading copy. It is truly a honor and amazing to be part of the journey with this series, one that I truly adore.
